Mornings shouldn't be like this

I am beginning to look like a panda. Or a vampire. Dark rings around the eyes. Grumpy replies.

Recently , I have been going back to the office in the dead of the night, right smack in the middle of the Ghost Month, because some company wants to shift their phone lines at that unearthly hour.

I am digging into my archives to post an old poem about such activities. Am I the only blogger who works in the middle of the night?

Morning

At 5.30
exactly
the alarm tore through
the darkened room
slit across my consciousness
           like a razor blade.

half eyes
peered at the dawn
outside it was pouring
the rain straining to smash
12-gauge water pellets
           through the panes.

i fought
the comfort of warm sheets
stumbled to the bathroom
white light numbing the eyes
the running water from the tap
           cold as arctic ice.

the rain
ricochetting
through the louvres
splattered on cold tiles
as i coughed a breath
           stale as a sewer

then dressed
noisily in the darkness
as a flash of lightning
illuminated the dark room
& the curves of my woman's buttocks,
           taut in the dim light.

i fumbled
for the house keys
struggled
with the door
cursed in my best English
           and walked into the rain.

into the morning.

Mornings should be like that when you write such verses, I am sorry I am reading it on a sunday, how I wish I had that for breakfast on Monday and then the clinic would be so boring, thanks...by the way whatever happened to Medusa, too busy at work?

plus, nice of you to say that! But i'm sure you love your job and your patients, so the day won't be a bore for long. you just need to kickstart the morning with a coffee/tea and maybe a.... poem. :)

hmm, medusa, i think she's just started working, and must be swamped with work. this week was very bad for me too.

I woke up this morning at 3:00 am and wrote a poem. then went back to bed. I use to only write in the dead of night. But as I have gotten older I turn into a day person. As for the art work on my site yes they are all mine. I started off doing art before I turned to poetry.

Hi Dsnake,

I also work in the middle of the night, but luckily at home and I'm a nightowl by nature.

Your poem is descriptive and resonates with me, because there are many times I must arise "early" for me (later than you), and ugh, ugh- it's terrible. You captured it in your poem very well.

hi david,
there are some lovely artwork there, and i can't wait to see your hand-drawn ones. sometimes i wonder, do art and poetry go about hand in hand? :)

hey panda,
"blush" :)

hi pat,
"a string of pearls". :D
thank you!

hi gel,
actually, most of my working hours are in the day, but sometimes, some customers demand that their lines must be working, no matter what, and sometimes, there are planned activities at such unearthly hours.

thanks for your comments, and yeah, i think you see more of the moon than the sun! :)

Cursed in your best english? I prefer cursing in Hokkien. :D

Nice.

""i fought

My tap water is always warm in the morning. I think the heater retains the heat from the night before. In my experience, it's much better washing your face in warm water, you'll feel better and your eyes wouldn't hurt as much; I hear it also reduces those dark rings round the eyes.

>>Am I the only blogger who works in the middle of the night?

Hope you get a good bonus for your work. :)

Hey! Good to be back and reading yr stuff! Sure hope youre feeling better and more perky today :)
It seems cursing is therapeutic. Although I have stopped this habit since some of my christian good friends tend to give me the dirty stare-down when i used to do this. Thou shalt not swear!

You're raising a teenager and working full time! Complain lah, I think you're well-entitled to. Anyway, this is your blog right? Nobody can tell you to shuddup. On second thoughts well, maybe they can, but you can always tell them to get lost and go suck on a lollipop!
