crows feeding

This is in response to poet Christine Klocek-Lim's "spark" to write an animal poem. Okay, the subject may not be cuddly or lovely, but that's me.

Don't read this before dinner.

Crows

crows feeding

does it care about
the big tyres rolling past
it on the asphalt?

or what the humans think
of its table manners
as it tugs
at the remains
of what was once
     a rat
        run over by a car

it and its brethren
stabbing, hacking
at flesh and intestines
sure as a butcher slicing meat
as they jostle and bicker
over choice parts
blotches of blood and fur
            on black beaks
dark wings flapping
stirring dust and dead leaves

does it care what you think?
in a few days
the crow cullers will come
with their garbage bags and guns
and some of its brothers
or itself

         will die

but for now it will feast
even as big vehicles roll by.

This is cool.
To think from the birds' view.
Vivid and visceral.
