some things are eternal

Today will be my late wife's birthday, if she's still alive.

Here is something I wrote for her. Strange, how most of my favourite writings were written in a short space of time. This one was done in less than half an hour, and with little revision.

Death Angel

2.25 a.m. 28th January 1994

why didn't death take a break
that night in the hospital?
get a coffee, take a smoke
       or lose its way
but dragged those chains
down
those dim corridors
clanging, grating
a stench of rotted wood
a blur of a shadow
       a cold whiff of frangipanni
then
it took her away, gently
leaving me
at 3am
all alone
looking out at a sodden sky
about to weep.

Strong emotions in this one. One can quite feel the sorrow coming off the screen.

Often when something affects me deeply, like lost, it doesn't take a lot of time to come up with something strong.

Your poem reflects the deep wound a close loss produces. It never heals, we just cover it up. These anniversaries can sure take the wind out of you, my heart goes out to you.

Good one. Love endures through separation and loss. That's the beauty of this unique gift.
Hugs to you my friend.

I can feel the grief pouring out from the screen. The feeling that death is not fair. That sometimes there is nothing you can do though you would give everything to make it otherwise. My heart goes out to you.

' Looking out at the sodden sky about to weep' What a wounderful line. You nailed it with this one. Isn't it good to know that after some year that a poem stands up holding its own thoughtout the passing years. This poem is timeless as all good poetry is. Thank you for your comments on the grapic poems what I am trying to do is reduse words to an object so that being able to read them is not so important but I will take your subjeation and post also what the words are saying

Oh, somehow I missed this when you kindly added the link to my post asking for people's favourite poems of their own. I'm glad I found it now. It's beautiful and real. I weep gently in recognition – accompanied by the conviction that a loving marriage is a great blessing, which lasts beyond loss. (As I'm sure you don't need telling.) A good favourite.
